If a person is looking at raising pasture Pork, here is a great video from VergePermaculture YouTube channel that I think you will like.
I came across this video a few years ago and I enjoy how Joel Salatin lays out how he runs his hogs. It is great how he describes the layout of his paddocks and how he moves the pigs through over time. I also thought it was very interesting how they use a wooden gate to move them from one paddock to the next. I didn't realize how smart the pigs are. If they know there was an electric fence at one point, it is very hard to convince them it is no longer there.
Another thing I found interesting was how quickly these paddocks can be set up and taken down if needed. Alone with how quickly these can be set up there is also very little infrastructure and equipment needed. The main equipment needed are the post, wire, electric fence, feed and water systems. This is no large building, concrete or emptying of the manure pit etc. Again, I am not saying that if you have hog barns you are bad. I do believe if everyone went to this system of producing pork, it would shock the system and make pork unaffordable for many individuals. It is the same thing when we look at cars. If overnight we went from gas and diesel to Electric there would not be the infrastructure in place to handle this switch and also brand new EV's would not be affordable for many individuals.
Lastly, I wanted to comment on the price he is selling his product for. Joel has been doing this for a while and has been able to find a market where the members he is selling to are willing to pay a premium for the way he is raising his products, which is great and I know of many other farmers who have charged similar prices, but I recently purchased a hog raised on pasture that was half the cost of of what Joel mentioned in the video. Again, Joel has found the customers who want his product.
I hope you found this video helpful. My goal is to share the different information that I have come across and want to point you to others who are more knowledgeable than I am on these topics. If you found this information helpful, please subscribe below!
